Four vehicles appeared on a narrow road…
After a small group of zombies was annihilated, one of the cars rushed to the front.
"Captain Jiang, should we rest here tonight? This is a rural area so we may encounter many large mutant beasts," Shao Feng said.
Jiang Liushi glanced at the tablet with the map, and he saw they had a long way to go until they reached northern Jiangsu. Actually, in order to make the trip safer, they had to bypass all the major cities in the area.
After the ordeal with Hong Yue, Jiang Liushi had gained a new understanding of the zombies' evolution. In big cities, where millions of people once lived, and without any troops to thin their numbers, it was very possible to chance upon monstrous entities. Another reason they had decided to take detours, was to avoid mutant zombies' nests. Jiang Liushi's motto was that they had to be cautious.
Shenhai Island's military had already discovered the earthworms' colony, which they called 'Wormhole.' Mutant beast's nesting places were similar to ant colonies as the mutant beasts' numbers residing inside were plenty.
On the map, the town they had reached had only a name tag. It was not a tourist area, just an ordinary town. As a result, Jiang Liushi couldn't find many details on the map. After losing the networking capabilities, the downloaded map had many flaws.
After cleaning up some of the zombies, they stopped at a hotel near the town's entrance. When the soldiers rushed into the hotel, a few zombies acted, but they immediately died under the soldiers' fire.
Shao Feng professionally led his team to inspect the perimeter and inside the hotel, and then they dragged the dead zombies back to the car.
"Captain Jiang, we've cleaned up a few rooms. 301 and 305 look clean as there were no bodies inside; they're just a bit dusty. Your members can take them and rest," Shao Feng came and said.
"We're also going to dump the zombies' bodies far from here."
"Why? You can throw them wherever you want in the city," Jiang Zhuying asked.
"Mutant zombies and mutant beasts have evolved to such a terrifying degree, that they're sensitive to human blood and decaying odors," Shao Feng answered.
"On the way to deal with the bodies, we'll also be looking for gas stations and supermarkets. We need to find some material and other resources…"
"You can go," Jiang Liushi said.
Star City Base was in need of material and resources, so they had to search every nook and cranny on the way. Jiang Liushi didn't care much, as a small town like that, couldn't have anything he needed.
"Let's cook," said Jiang Liushi.
Zhang Hai and Sun Kun took out the gas tank and stove to cook.
"Let's have soup today," Zhang Hai said.
Ran Xiyu said suddenly, "It seems that someone was injured." She had just activated her domain to stay alert, but she did not expect for something to happen.
"Injured?" Jiang Liushi also asked.
"Well, let me take a closer look." Ran Xiyu was silent for two seconds, and then she answered unexpectedly, "I've found some people. They seem like survivors."
"I'll go and check. Zhang Hai, Sun Kun, you stay here to guard the camp," Jiang Liushi said, and then they left.
The streets were very old. Some of the vehicles blocking the road were directly squeezed by Jiang Liushi's minibus. There are some stalls on the roadside, but now the items had long decayed and people where nowhere to be found.
"Where is it?" Jiang Liushi asked.
"Turn left," Ran Xiyu said.
After turning left, Jiang Liushi saw Shao Feng's car. They had stopped in front of a grocery store.
At that time, several soldiers were standing at the door, with their weapons aiming inside. Seeing Jiang Liushi's minibus coming, a soldier immediately ran over.
"What happened?" Jiang Liushi asked.
A dozen survivors were hidden inside. But when a soldier just entered, he was suddenly attacked.
"I'll help him," said Li Yuxin.
That soldier felt puzzled, but then his eyes flashed. "Are you a doctor?"
"Yes." Li Yuxin nodded.
"That's great! I'll bring that soldier over here," the soldier said excitedly.
Star City Base had only a few doctors. As a result, the Reconnaissance Team had left without a doctor, only a handful of newly-trained medics, who could only give first aid treatment and treat external wounds. Unfortunately, in this world, a few wounds could lead to severe infections, and the medics had no way to prevent them.
"No, I'll come with you," Li Yuxin explained.
Jiang Liushi and Ran Xiyu also got off and walked into that room. It was a small room, but it was filled with many empty shelves. That wounded soldier was leaning on a vat while a medic was treating his wound.
"The injury is life-threatening!" Li Yuxin looked at his wound and then her expression changed. A knife had diagonally penetrated the soldier's neck. Once it was pulled out, it would cause bleeding.
"The survivors? Where are they?" Jiang Liushi asked.
Hearing this question, the medic looked up and answered, "They are inside."
At this moment, Jiang Liushi heard a voice coming from inside, "We have children, and we haven't eaten anything for a long time. We need nutrition!"
After the voice died down, some survivors stormed out. When they got out, the indescribable lingering stench coming from their bodies filled the air. A middle-aged woman was pulling a young 10-year-old boy to come out too.
Seeing that group of people, Jiang Liushi was stunned as he felt that something was wrong.
